Nas/Al Hirt Re-Edit "Harlem-Queens Hendoo" dj jesster

put together a couple of my favs here.  the al hirt song "harlem hendoo" and nas' "if i ruled the world" for this one.  it's a second attempt at ableton live for me.  trying to chop up the original, then add some equally chopped drums and a vocal flavor from the nas song "if i ruled the world" featuring lauren hill, aka l-boogie.  it's not perfect but it's what i came out with tonight.
it's not exactly what i set out to do, but i like it enough to post it.  nas is definitely in my top 7 for emcees.  al hirt is not in my top 7 for trumpet guys but i've loved this sample ever since de la used it for "ego trip" .. i'm starting to sense a trend here.. one of these days i'll have this ableton thing worked out better... probably never as good as i had that sp1200 mastered, but at least better than now.  hope you dig it.
peace,
jesster

The Dirty Rappers "Fowl Play" spoof on Deep Cover by Snoop and Dre

this past sunday was the violas. it's the award show/hoiday party for the village theatre... this has been a very interesting year for the guys at the VT, mostly bad but with tons of promise at the end.  we are moving to a new space in 2012 and just launched a very successful kickstarter campaign to raise money for the move.  people are very excited about the promise that 2012 holds.. thus making for a great violas to end 2011.

one of the cool things about the violas is that some of the guys/girls put together video presentations.  bleez has always had an idea of doing a song called "fowl play" about the places to get cheap eats in the old 4th ward.. sort of as a sequel to the song i did about east atlanta called "eat that chicken."  it's basically a spoof video on the dre and snoop song "deep cover."  we shot a video last weekend and i edited this the other night.

the Village Theatre on kickstarter

please help out to support something that i support. the village theatre is having to move from their current location to a new space. the current location is getting demolished but this is a good thing. the guys at the VT are using this as an opportunity to move up in the world of improv comedy.

in an effort to help raise the necessary funds to make this move possible the guys are using a site called kickstarter.com .. they are offering free tickets to shows and other great promo items as incentives to help get the new location off the ground. please check it out and show the guys your support.

Joe Sample "In All My Wildest Dreams" DJ jesster re-edit

one of the records in my vinyl collection that i always felt was underrated was a joe sample album called "rainbow seeker."  it had a hidden gem on there called "in all my wildest dreams."  at first i just thought it was cool 'cause it was the sample that de la soul used on the album "de la soul is dead" for their WRMS skits..  but as i got to listening to the song i started to appreciate it for what it was.

lately i've been working with ableton live a little bit.  i'm still figuring it out and i have a long way to go before i would consider myself proficient, but this was a decent start.  i went home to boston last weekend and put this together mostly on the flight.  my idea was to take a funky jazz kinda song and make a DJ friendly edit of it that you could use to start or end a party.  this seemed like a good place to start.  i warped the track and basically just added some drums and a bassline.  i wouldn't say i made the song better because it was fine as it was.. i just kinda DJ'ed it up.

since this worked out pretty good, as far as i'm concerned, i'm going to probably try and do some more.. i've already got a few classics from the crates in mind.
thanks for listening.
peace,

jesster

10 Year Anniv of the Sad Death of AALIYAH .. so i did a mash-up tribute DJ jesster style

Aaliyah died way too young .. 22 years old.  she was in a plane crash.  in my opinion her career was just getting going.  she was getting away from the typical R&B stuff and was carving out a unique sound that really set her apart.

Aaliyah TRIBUTE mash-up - dj jesster by jesstermix77

as a tribute i took a dubstep track i've been kinda feeling and put the "we need a resolution" acapella to it.  i always thought that song was ahead of it's time .. both in it's tempo and how the flow was kinda half-speed.  i used to mix it with drum and bass vinyl.  so for a 10 yr anniv i thought some dubstep would be a cool twist.

C.R.E.A.M. El Michels with Wu-Tang Clan Lyrics

Cream Team - El Michels Affair w Wu Lyrics by jesstermix77

always loved what the El Michels Affair did with the wu stuff, but wished there were lyrics to go with it.  classic hip hop song with a dope band providing a beat.  mashed 'em together in soundtrack pro.  don't love that program (especially with pitch-shifting) but it worked out decent.

WANTED: "Big Pimpin'" by Jay-Z Acapella

everyone knows "big pimpin'" .. we don't need to discuss if the song is dope or not.  what we need to discuss is the fact that there is no acapella out there for it.  there's like a million jay-z acapellas .. why not big pimpin'??  if anyone knows of one or has any info please hit me up.. i've got an idea for a project that would require it... not even the whole thing.. just the first verse and the chorus really.

i should probably just ask J himself, huh.. does anyone have Jay-Z's email address that they could fwd to me?  ..thanks.

Smoke Training

here's a little vid i put together while testing out the Autodesk editing tool called "Smoke."  it's a pretty cool tool that combines editing and compositing.  I didn't do too much compositing here but for a first shot I think it came out okay.  for the record, I'm not a Heat fan, I just used clips that I had easy access to.

Mixtape 3512: Summer of '97 - Art of the mixtape

Growing up DJing meant mixtapes... lots of mixtapes.  At some point in my life i started numbering them... to be honest I didn't start at mixtape #1.  I think I did some rough math and started in the neighborhood of 3200.

I used to pump out mixtapes like at least one a week... this is when mixtapes were actually on tape (yeah, like as in a cassette.) You had two 45 minute sides of blank canvas to work with and you pretty much only got one shot..  more advanced mixtape artists (such as your boy jesse) could work the 'punch-in' pretty well in the later years, but you pretty much tried to do it all in one rip.

For some reason I decided to go all out for mixtape 3512...  original beats, guest appearance talksets and some songs that were remixed special for this one tape.  It ended up being one of the more refined and well-crafted mixtapes that I had put together..  I must have made at least 30 copies to send out to friends (who remembers high speed dubbing?)

I've got to thank fresh for ripping this one.  The digital era has definitely changed the art of the mixtape into something a little more accessible (however in my opinion unfortunately less personal.)  Hope you like it:

Dear Atlanta: Please Clean Up the Old 4th Ward

Let's talk about Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward, or as I like to say "the oh-four-dubb."  For a city like Atlanta where most of the tourism revolves around new, less-historic venues such as the aquarium, the World of Coke, the CNN center, the the High museum and Centennial Park it's really great that there exists an area that can boast a strong history with southern roots and an attachment to the civil rights movement.  The O4W is the area where Dr Martin Luther King grew up, was a reverend at Ebenezer baptist church, is now buried and is commemorated in the MLK center.  Visitors to Atlanta and residents alike can come down to the O4W and take a tour of the MLK birth home, see the church where MLK preached, pay respects at the burial site and then go across the street to learn about MLK's role in the civil rights movement at the King Center all within a radius of about 4 blocks.  It's a very powerful and inspiring tour that I recommend anyone in Atlanta check out.  The Old 4th Ward is possibly the area in Atlanta with the most impressive resumé and should be something that evokes a sense of regional pride.

Then why is it such a shithole?

I drive through the area on my way to work every day.  From Decatur st i take a right on Boulevard and then a Left on Edgewood and go right through what is undoubtedly one of the nastiest, ugliest areas in metro Atlanta.  The O4W or as I like to think of it "Crack City" .. At all hours of the day you can see the most disturbing, cracked-out and generally fucked up sights that Atlanta has to offer.  Yes, I know it's an "up and coming" area with some new bars and restaurants..  cool spots like Soundtable, the Village Theatre and the Corner Tavern etc ..  I can dig it.  I am not however letting my girl walk around there at night alone, HELLS NO.  Is the Atlanta department of tourism suggesting that visitors to our fine city take the Marta to the MLK stop and walk to the MLK center?  That is a joke...

"Hi, welcome to Atlanta.  On your stroll from the train you'll be passing by historic Oakland Cemetery and the beautiful Hilliard Street Hotel.  Notice the Elizabethan boarded-up windows and barbed wire around the parking lot.. oh, and please watch your step as you walk over the passed out crackhead.. all part of the lovely charm of the O4W."

How about Selena Butler park?  It's completely fenced in with a "Park Closed for Renovations" notice on the fence.. only there are no signs whatsoever of any renovations.  no bulldozers, no trucks, not even an orange cone.  The notice should read "park closed due to too many crackheads occupying this space."

Kasim, you are a solid guy.
Do the city a favor and get the O4W back to a respectable level.  Seriously... what should be one of the nicest, most well-kept areas of the city is a dump.  With all the great things that are in the area it is unacceptable that it is in the state that it is in.

my 2¢,
~jesster

p.s. if your answer is "we are currently in the process of blah blah blah" they my answer to your answer is "sorry but your small effort is not enough."

Crazy Guy On Marta: Rambling Nonsense vs Profound Dialogue

so this morning i was riding marta..  it's a saturday but we've got a ton to do here so off to work we go.  at the five points station you could hear this guy talking to his friend from across the platform.  he wasn't exactly screaming but he was definitely one of those guys whose conversation level was loud enough that everyone within 40 yards could hear him.  his voice was way raspy... like he started smoking at age 8, and now 50 years later he's still smokin' a pack a day.
the train comes and we get on and he's still talking to his friend.  at this point i didn't think he was that crazy guy, because at least he was talking to someone.  well, at the next stop his friend gets off the train and he stays on... and he stays talking... only now he's not talking to anyone in particular.  he's now the crazy guy that talks real loud to the whole train and hopes someone will listen to him.
since his voice was interesting i thought i'd whip out the iphone and record him.  as soon as i start rolling the guy gets into the auspicious subject of death.

so was he just a crazy guy on the train rambling on about living to die and talkin' shit?  or was he one of those really deep dudes that speaks mad profound monologues disguised as a crazy dude on the train?

upon further review the ruling on the field stands: crazy.
marta guy will be charged a timeout.
