i've been meaning to do this for about 4 months. this is a 45 king remix of the Take 6 song spread love. i've had it on a "bozo meko" 12" since high school. i've always wanted a digital copy so i finally got around to getting it to an mp3. we used to sample this drum beat all the time back in the day. file this one under: classic hip-hop vinyl brought back to life through binary code.

british audio production magazine Future Music has put "flat shoals rider" on their dvd and reviewed the song in their latest issue. pretty cool to think of a bunch of people in london listening to a song about east atlanta... wonder if they'll get the buffalo china reference...
Shannon and Kitsy are throwing an event at Sage Buckhead on thursday. not just a party, but a fundraiser. i was asked to DJ. there will be a runway segment too. Kitsy asked me to put the music together ahead of time for the runway ... she hand picked a bunch of the songs and i threw in some of my own flair. here's a sneak preview:

so a little while back i got a mix cd from turntable lab called "monk's dream" by Dj monkone. it was a pretty good comp, lots of soul. well the nice people at turntable lab shipped that mix cd with a 7" vinyl piece that had a re-edit of a song on there called "cross country" by archie whitewater. it was a great re-edit. if you don't know the difference between a re-edit and a remix it's basically that a re-edit doesn't change the song that much, it just kinda takes the song and extends the good parts. a remix would be more of an overhaul that incorporates some elements of the original, or keeps the lyrics and puts new music behind it.
anyways, i lost track of that 7" along the way somewhere. i emailed turntable lab but they said that it's no longer available. i looked pretty hard online to find some kind of .wav file or .mp3 of it but i couldn't find it anywhere. so i decided to bring it into reason and re-create the re-edit as best as i could remember how it was done by monkone. it became sort of a sampling exercise in reason.
i think part of why i liked this track so much had to do with the fact that i was just starting to learn the trumpet at the time when i heard it. i love the horn line in the song and just the mellow overall feeling.... akinyele and common have both sampled this song. the reason why this song came back in my head was actually 'cause i heard the common song "chapter 13" off his 1st album.

on saturday august 1st at 2192 cloverdale there'll be a hollaque. special guest in town will be dollar bill coming in from boston. there will be music a keg of pbr good food on the grill and good people hangin' out. i'll probably hook up a few racks of ribs [about as many as will fit in 2 crockpots] but they'll go quick so get there early if you want some ribs. 21+ to take part in the pbr, but this party will be pretty kid friendly [at least on the front end, can't guarantee anything after midnight.]
